MGMA statement on ONC Task Force Report on Prior Authorization

"To date, there have been few concrete steps taken to curb the growing number of prior authorization demands, an issue that MGMA members consistently report is the leading administrative burden for medical groups and a process that delays or denies patients the care they need. While the ONC Task Force highlights a number of potential actions, in our comments on the report, we urge ONC to focus on three main goals: reduce the overall volume of prior authorization requirements; increase the transparency of health plan requirements; and identify opportunities to automate prior authorization transactions. As we transition to a new administration, we call on the federal government to leverage MGMA’s recommendations and take definitive action to address onerous health plan prior authorization requirements."
