MGMA statement to HHS/OCR re: proposed modifications to the HIPAA Privacy Rule
    Anders Gilberg
    Senior Vice President, Govermment Affairs
    Medical Group Management Association

“MGMA supports removing regulatory barriers to care coordination and allowing greater patient access to medical records, but in written comments to the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR), we stress the need to maintain a careful balance. MGMA has significant concerns regarding proposals to increase access to protected health information, particularly to third parties, without sufficiently safeguarding the security and privacy of patient data. Medical practices are currently making significant operational changes pursuant to the 21st Century Cures Act. MGMA recommends that OCR pause on finalizing revisions to the HIPAA Privacy Rule until information blocking requirements have been fully implemented.”
