MGMA Statement on Latest Prior Authorization Data
Anders Gilberg
Senior Vice President, Government Affairs
Medical Group Management Association
βNew MGMA data shows physician practices continue to face mounting prior authorization requirements, with nearly 80% reporting that requirements have increased over the past 12 months. Only 2% reported a decrease in prior authorization requirements over the same period. These onerous prior authorization requirements present medical groups with a variety of obstacles β including issues submitting documentation through non-standardized health plan web portals, as well as constantly changing medical necessity requirements and appeals processes β and often result in dangerous delays to patient care and unnecessary increases in administrative overhead. MGMA is once again calling on Congress to pass legislation that would reduce the overall volume and burden of prior authorization requirements, allowing medical groups to focus on delivering high-quality care to the patients they serve.β
