What the 'C' in cFTE Really Should Mean
This session will take place from 7:30 am to 8:30 am in Sapphire A. Speakers include Jonathan K. Leer, MHA, FHFMA, FACMPE, Division Administrator-Geriatric Medicine and Hematology, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Daffodil Baez, FACHE, MPH, MBA, Chief Executive Officer, Howard University Faculty Practice Plan, and Vincent B. Orange, Jr., MBA, MHSA, Chief Operating Officer, Howard University Faculty Practice Plan.

In this session, the speakers will challenge the traditional interpretation of cFTE and explore a broader approach to providers' time in your organization. While one interpretation focuses on clinic-related work, we will share real-world experiences and discuss how time spent on other activities can be valuable and impactful. By looking beyond the common formulaic definition, we can redefine cFTE and recognize the overall benefit of face-to-face patient interactions and their impact on the entire practice.

Leer is part of the team that has developed a new MGMA offering, What Docs Don't Get Taught: Physician Business Training, a comprehensive and self-paced program designed to equip physicians with essential business knowledge and skills that are often overlooked in medical school. With the inclusion of a proprietary starting physician compensation report and the opportunity to earn up to 7 hours of CME credit, this course offers a comprehensive and convenient solution for physicians seeking to enhance their business acumen and succeed in their medical practices.

    AI in Revenue Cycle Automation
"Navigating the Maze of AI in Revenue Cycle Automation" begins at 1:30 pm in Sapphire EI. Paola Turchi, MSHCA, FHFMA, FACMPE, CPC from Notable Health will guide you through the transformative potential of AI-powered automation in revenue management.

Gain valuable insights into overcoming real-life challenges faced by healthcare organizations and discover innovative strategies that lead to substantial improvements in revenue cycle efficiency. Take advantage of actionable checklists and implementation guides, enabling you to directly apply this knowledge to your front-end revenue cycle operations. By attending, you'll be equipped to drive positive changes and achieve enhanced financial outcomes for your organization.

Earlier this year, Turchi wrote an article for MGMA.com on streamlining prior authorization. In the article, she provided several tips about preparing for an automated future. Here are a few highlights from that article

    • Data security and compliance: Ensure that the chosen automation solution is in compliance with industry regulations regarding data security and provides robust measures to safeguard patient information throughout the prior authorization process.
    • Start with pilot programs: Pilot programs allow for real-world testing, fine-tuning of workflows and identifying any unforeseen challenges or opportunities for improvement before a full-scale rollout. This approach is also known as the crawl, walk and run approach.
    • Continuous monitoring and optimization: Post-implementation, establish a system that allows for regular assessment of the performance of the automated processes, gathering feedback from staff and collaborating with the vendor to implement enhancements as needed.

The ROI of Organizational DEI Initiatives
Taking place from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm in Sapphire A, this session features DEI expert Jessica Ellis-Wilson, CHW, FACMPE, Founder & Principal of Practical Management & Leadership Consulting.

By attending this session, you'll walk away with a comprehensive understanding of the benefits of DEI initiatives and their potential impact on your organization. Learn how to leverage DEI to address common pain points in healthcare, such as burnout and health disparities, while improving provider and patient satisfaction. Gain valuable insights into best practices for designing, implementing, and evaluating DEI initiatives, helping you avoid common pitfalls. Additionally, you'll explore different metrics that can effectively measure the impact of DEI initiatives, providing evidence of their return on investment.

Empathy comes naturally for some, but according to Ellis-Wilson, it can also become learned behavior. She notes that organizations can practice compassionate empathy through regular exercises during team meetings or huddles. For example, your team could consider the irate patient who visited your practice last Monday and assess what happened:

    • What was the patient going through?
    • What was their mood like?
    • What could have been going on in that person’s life that might have made them sad, anxious, scared or angry?
    • How did you contribute to how that person felt?
    • What could you have done or said to improve their situation?

The more you practice these types of exercises, the easier it will be for you to empathize with others. “We have to be able to … hold space for all sides to feel heard and validated regardless of the outcome,” Ellis-Wilson says.
