Dear Sens. Boozman, Warnock, Collins, and Schumer, and Reps. Sewell and Fitzpatrick:

On behalf of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Advocacy Coalition, the undersigned organizations offer our enthusiastic support for the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2025 (S. 2439/ H.R. 4731). This bipartisan legislation is crucial to expanding the physician workforce and ensuring that patients across the country are able to access quality care from health providers.

As demand for health care services continues to rise, projections show a physician shortage of up to 86,000 primary care and specialty doctors by 2036.1 To meet this growing need, America’s medical schools, teaching hospitals, and physicians are making significant investments in training the next generation of providers and advancing innovative care delivery models. These efforts are improving efficiency and expanding access, but they alone are not enough. Without expanding the pipeline of physicians, workforce shortages and access barriers will remain.
