    Managing and leading people — from recruitment and hiring, to training, performance management and retention — are core competencies for every healthcare executive. While many of the same regulations and skills apply or are required for managers or leaders in any industry, executives in healthcare delivery environments must be prepared for the nuances specific to the delivery of healthcare in a clinical setting. With that in mind, MGMA has designed the Human Resources Management Certificate program.

    Aligned with the Human Resources Management domain of the Body of Knowledge, this ACMPE Human Resources Management Certificate program is an in-depth online learning experience that provides healthcare leaders with a mastery of human resources management concepts, including: staffing plans, recruitment and compensation/benefits; employee engagement and talent management; and labor relations and employment law.

    The content for this 7-hour program will provide you with the knowledge to: 

    • Establish a staffing needs assessment 
    • Evaluate strategic plans for staff training and retention
    • Critique company policies and procedures 

    Upon completion of the 7-hour online program and after passing the exam, participants will receive the Human Resources Management Certificate and be issued an HRMC credential.

    Part 2 – Talent Management and Employee Engagement

    Employee engagement, trust, transparency and alignment of an organization’s mission, vision and values are critical elements of a healthy culture and workplace. This online program empowers participants to: assess training and development styles that connect with their employees; utilize performance evaluations as a tool for organizational effectiveness; and employ analytical, surveying and benchmarking tools to measure the effectiveness of employee engagement and talent management programs. These interactive sessions offer more than 30 minutes of Q&A with the presenters.

    This 2-hour program will provide you with the knowledge to: 

    • Establish staff development through adult learning models and learning styles
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of training techniques, methods and processes 
    • Measure employee engagement through surveying and benchmarking

    Part 3 – Labor Relations and Employment Law

    This online session will provide you with the understanding of regulatory compliance as well as company policies and procedures in the medical practice. The presenter, Judy Holmes, has more than 30 years of experience as an attorney and specializes in litigation and employment law for healthcare practices. Holmes will guide practice leaders through regulatory minefields such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, and the Equal Pay Act. This interactive session includes 15 minutes of Q&A with the presenter.

    This 1 hour, 40-minute program will provide you with the knowledge to:

    • Assess regulatory compliance in your practice
    • Evaluate unlawful discrimination, harassment, and retaliation 
    • Establish a comprehensive Handbook with effective policies and procedures

    View this session to learn best practices in implementing improvement initiatives in your organization. The session will start with discussing how best to structure an implementation plan and provide you the tools to get started. This session will also discuss topics vital to implementation success, such as choosing your team, how to best track the project's progress, and how to avoid common challenges you may face.  Attendees will receive an implementation toolkit and a robust question and answer opportunity with the speaker.

    Andrew Swanson, MPA, CMPE, Vice President of Industry Insights, MGMA 
    Andy Swanson is responsible for sharing MGMA’s expertise — as the nation’s largest association focused on the business of medical practice management — with the U.S. healthcare delivery industry. Prior to his current leadership role, he led MGMA Consulting, bringing custom solutions to practices across the country, addressing strategic and operational improvement issues.  

    Prior to joining MGMA, Andy spent five years as an internal consultant at Centura Health, helping build the integrated delivery network that exists today. Specifically, he focused on growing, improving and integrating more than 460 multispecialty physician group practices during a time of rapid expansion. His in-depth knowledge of talent management, organizational effectiveness, leadership and performance management enabled an expanded dyad team of leaders to successfully manage the growth of the group from 220 physicians to more than 400 in three years. Prior to working in healthcare, Andy spent 13 years as both an internal and outside consultant at dozens of companies across a multitude of industries including financial services, telecommunications and technology. The commonality across all his work was his ability to diagnose issues and deliver innovative yet easy-to-implement solutions focused on improving business performance. 

    Andy earned his masters degree in public administration from the University of Colorado, Denver, and his bachelor of arts degree in political science from the George Washington University. Andy is also credentialed as a Certified Medical Practice Executive and has previously been certified as a Senior Professional in HR (SPHR).

    Penny M. Crow, MS, SHRM-SCP, RHIA, is a nationally recognized executive with progressive senior leadership experience in a wide range of healthcare organizations. As an RHIA, she has a successful track record in health information management, revenue cycle, risk management, and quality improvement.     Judy received her BA degree from Colorado College and her JD degree from the University of Denver. She has practiced law for more than 30 years and has extensive trial experience, defending healthcare providers in medical negligence cases and employers in employment-related suits and claims. Her practice currently focuses on advising healthcare practices on risk management and employment law issues. 

    Judy is a faculty member of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. She has served as the Vice President of both the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Colorado Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She is a frequent speaker on employment law and practice management issues for several national medical groups and has authored numerous articles and medical textbook chapters on risk management, employment law, and compliance issues.

    Ava Cannon, PMP, Project Manager, MGMA
    Ava Cannon is a seasoned healthcare Project Manager who loves problem-solving, improving team workflows, and unsticking complex cross-functional projects. Ava began her career supporting hospital EMR systems and clinical administration for addiction services, where she discovered her passion for helping others and supporting clinical implementation from “nose to tail.” Since joining MGMA, Ava has been excited to support local and national practices to reach their full potential.
