Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I was new to healthcare and a colleague invited me to a state meeting. I learned so much and met so many great people at that first meeting. I knew I needed to belong to MGMA to improve my knowledge and skills as a manager.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

Meeting new members in the states I serve. Helping certified members become fellows.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

I fell into it quite by accident. We had just relocated. A friend of a friend was looking for a manager of a 3-doctor family practice clinic. Over the years I have had opportunities to get into other industries. It became clear to me during a job interview with a local college accounting office that healthcare was where I belonged. I’ve never looked back since. I love the variety of opportunities I’ve been given over the years. The industry is constantly changed. It keeps things interesting and intellectually challenging.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

Get involved. MGMA is the best place for industry statistics and resources. The opportunity to network has become the most valuable resource during my career. The MGMA members I have met throughout the country have been open, honest, willing to share ideas and always willing to mentor others.

What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?

How can I pick just one? The MGMA website is my favorite resource. There is always an article, paper, webinar or book on the issue you are facing.

How do you relax after a busy work week?

My Lhasa Aspo, Goldie, is waiting for me at home. She loves a good walk. On a nice summer day, I love to head out on the ND back roads on my Harley Davidson Deluxe. More recently spending time with grandchildren has become a favorite past time. I have 3 under the age of 3. I guess I like variety in my free time too!

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

I haven’t always been very good at this. Take time for yourself. There will always be work to be done; at work and at home. Do something you enjoy every day.
