    Volunteer Roles: State Liaison

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I had been a member and state representative of AzMGMA and began to attend national MGMA conferences and functions. I was amazed at the networking, knowledge and resources that were available to me on the national level. When my term as state president was over, I looked forward to serving MGMA.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

I would say without a doubt the friendships and networking. I have received far more from volunteering and serving. Going to conferences and picking up pearls along the way to enrich my own practice have helped me professionally in ways that I would never have been exposed to sitting in my office.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

I began as a registered nurse a hundred years ago because women were secretaries, teachers or nurses. Although nursing is a wonderful career, it was not for me. I went back to school, and I found that I enjoyed accounting. However, I did not want to be buried in numbers all day. I enjoy people a lot, and so I sought to bridge the two careers. Practice administration was a perfect blend.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

I tell them to network and get involved with their professional organization. I did not know what I did not know when I started out. Through my professional organization I was able to see what my strengths and weaknesses were. MGMA has many resources that you can use to build upon your knowledge base.

What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?

Although it has been quite a while since I got my CMPE and became a Fellow, I want to plug all of the ACMPE books and materials, as well as the information available to all members through MGMA’s help desk. I’ve been able to access articles, previous Fellow papers and so much more with the help of MGMA staff. The new website makes it even easier to find what you are looking for.

How do you relax after a busy work week?

Spending time with family and our dogs is always a joy. My husband and I adopted a new puppy on New Year’s Day, Scarlett, and we love to go on long walks with her.

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

I am working on this, and I am always looking for tips on how to do so. Last year I went on my first European vacation and nearly fainted when I realized I had left my cell phone at home. It turned out to be the best thing ever. I disconnected from work and was able to completely live in the moment! I totally recommend trying this.
