For centuries, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) have played a pivotal role in filling the gap in rural, physician shortage areas.  Through constant changes in education, government mandates and, at times, physician scrutiny, they have consistently prevailed as essential clinicians.  This research will give a comprehensive history and evolution of APPs; who are comprised by Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Nurse Midwives and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. In addition, it will explore the reasons for physician shortages in rural areas, as well as, solutions to this long-standing challenge. The study will conclude that APPs have improved customer service, enriched the quality of care and met the fundamental needs of patients who otherwise may not have access to any healthcare.
