In 2014, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) created a new healthcare marketplace for Americans to enroll in coverage. Tax credits are offered to enrollees who meet income and other eligibility requirements. In 2021, Congress passed legislation to enhance Marketplace tax credits by increasing financial assistance and expanding the income eligibility threshold. In 2022, this enhanced tax credit policy was extended through the 2025 plan year. Over the last four years, the enhanced tax credits made Marketplace coverage more affordable for individuals already receiving financial assistance and expanded financial assistance eligibility to individuals making over 400% of the federal poverty level. Despite interest from both sides of the aisle, as of November, Congress has not extended the enhanced tax credits. Next year, the cost of health insurance will rise for many patients who enrolled in the Marketplace.
