    Session Overview

Session 1 - The Pillars of Physician Retention: Creating an Engaged, Purpose-Driven Workforce

Retaining physicians has become a critical challenge for healthcare organizations, as high turnover rates disrupt patient care and organizational stability. Studies show that today’s early-career physicians are more likely to leave their first position within two years compared to previous generations that stayed six years on average, highlighting the urgency for effective retention strategies. Addressing this issue requires more than just a  big paycheck—it demands a focus on the deeper factors influencing physician satisfaction and engagement.

In this session, we’ll explore the essential pillars of physician retention: work-life balance, career growth, meaningful connection, and compensation. Attendees will learn how these factors interconnect to shape physician satisfaction, reduce burnout, and improve overall well-being. We’ll also examine how helping physicians reconnect with their sense of purpose in medicine—whether through patient care, teaching, or community involvement—can reignite their passion and strengthen their commitment to their roles.

By prioritizing these pillars and implementing tailored retention strategies, healthcare organizations can go beyond just offering competitive compensation to create a workplace where physicians feel valued, supported, and connected to their purpose. This approach will not only reduce turnover but will also help build a mission-driven workforce that fosters long-term organizational success.

    Learning Objectives:

Examine the primary drivers of physician retention—work-life balance, career growth, meaningful connection, and compensation—and their collective impact on turnover and organizational stability.

Understand the importance of reconnecting physicians with their sense of purpose in medicine, and how this can mitigate burnout and enhance career satisfaction.

Explore effective strategies for designing retention programs that incorporate these key elements to support long-term physician engagement.
