Surgical Scrub Technician

Job Summary: Responsible for ensuring proper care and use of surgical instruments.  Performs surgical scrubbing responsibilities as outlined below in an accurate, dependable and safe manner.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
  1. Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each approved procedure
  2. Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians’ preference cards
  3. Inspects equipment for proper working condition
  4. Follows principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures
  5. Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure
  6. Arranges instruments according to given procedure
  7. Confirms that instruments work properly
  8. Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays
  9. Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action according to policy
  10. Correctly uses, cares for, cleans, and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed
  11. Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety
  12. Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure
  13. Assists in storing and stocking supplies/works closely with Materials Manager
  14. Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons’ preference cards
  15. Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician
  16. Accurately anticipates physician’s needs in surgery
  17. Documents patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures
  18. Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient’s status
  19. Other duties as assigned
  20. Compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and Red Flags
  21. Supports the facility’s ideology, mission, goals, and objectives
  22. Performs in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures
  23. Follows the facility’s standards for ethical business conduct
  24. Recognizes patients’ rights and responsibilities and supports them in performance of job duties
  25. Performs duties in an accurate and organized manner
  26. Completes duties within appropriate timeframes
  27. Shows initiative and dependability including punctuality and attendance
  28. Fosters a culture of outstanding patient service showing courtesy in interactions with patients, physicians and co-workers
  29. Promotes effective communication among the facility’s clinical areas, business office, and physician practices
  30. Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities
  31. Maintains current CPR certification
  32. Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities
Requirements:
  1. High school graduate or GED certificate recipient
  2. Completion of surgical scrub technician program
  3. CST Certification within 1 year of hire
  4. Strong ethical and moral character references
  5. Two years of previous operating room experience preferred
  6. ASC experience preferred
  7. Computer literacy preferred
Physical/Mental Demands:
  1. Ability to walk, sit, and stand for long periods
  2. Visual and auditory acuity for frequent use of computer, telephone, and occasional use of other office equipment
  3. Capability for occasional overhead and low reaching
  4. Physical strength for equipment needs and patient-care activities
  5. Visual and auditory acuity for timely responsiveness and patient-care assessment activities
  6. Ability to move quickly in response to patient needs
  7. Ability to frequently make judgments on/respond to problems
  8. Ability to occasionally make judgments on/respond to disasters/emergencies, actual events, or drills
  9. Hepatitis immunization/negative TB test (annual testing)
Working Conditions:
  1. Well lit and ventilated, with non-hazardous equipment
  2. Involves occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids and materials
