Sonographer/Ultrasonographer

Reports To: Laboratory, Obstetrics/Perinatologist, or Clinical Services Manager

Job Summary: This position is responsible for using diagnostic medical equipment to diagnose various medical conditions. Sonography, or ultrasonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for assessment and diagnosis. May specialize in obstetric/gynecologic, abdominal, neurosonograpy, or breast sonography.

Primary Job Responsibilities: 
  1. Reviews patient’s medical history and physician’s instructions.
  2. Prepares equipment for procedure. Selects appropriate equipment settings. 
  3. Explains procedure to patient and records any medical history that may be relevant to the condition being viewed. Directs the patient to move into positions that will provide the best view.
  4. Spreads gel on the skin to aid the transmission of sound waves.
  5. Operates special equipment to direct nonionizing, high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body. The equipment collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be videotaped, transmitted, or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician.
  6. Views the screen during the scan, looking for visual cues that contrast healthy areas with unhealthy ones. Selects images to show to the physician for diagnostic purposes. 
  7. Takes measurements, calculates values, and analyzes the results in preliminary reports for the physicians.
  8. Keeps patient records and adjusts/maintains equipment. 
  9. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  10. Complies with safety, infection control, and quality improvement policies/procedures.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma. Associate or bachelor’s degree in sonography from accredited school. Training may be available in hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, and the Armed Forces. 

Experience: Minimum one or more years of experience and/or training with graduate sonographer.

Other Requirements: No state license required. Certification of competency and registration available through organizations such as the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Registration requires passing a general physical principles and instrumentation examination, in addition to passing an exam in a specialty such as ob/gyn sonography, abdominal sonography, or neurosonography.

  1. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, instrumentation, basic physics, patient care, and medical ethics.
  2. Knowledge of mathematics and science.
  3. Knowledge of safety, infection control, and quality improvement practices to establish a safe work environment.
Skills:
  1. Skill in communication and interpersonal interactions.
  2. Skill in performing mathematical and scientific calculations.
  3. Skill in gathering and analyzing patient data.
Abilities:
  1. Ability to explain technical procedures and results to patients in user-friendly manner.
  2. Ability to calm patients who may be nervous about the procedure.
  3. Ability to use correct body mechanics to assist patients appropriately.
  4. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  5. Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, management and peers.
  7. Ability to competently use Microsoft Office.
Equipment Operated: Variety of sonography equipment including ultrasound machines, transducers, gels, and computer hardware/software.

Work Environment: Combination of exam and laboratory rooms and darkroom. In some situations, may work in operating room. Sometimes works in close quarters. Exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, and other conditions related to clinic settings.

Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a Sonographer such as standing for long periods.  Eye sight correctable to 20/20 to operate equipment and read information from printed sources and computer screens. May have to lift/turn disabled patients. Work primarily at diagnostic imaging machines involving standing, sitting, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching. Some stress related to dealing with anxious patients.
