The CARES Act, signed into law on March 27, authorized $349 billion in loans to cover small business payroll costs under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) with the purpose of helping employers retain employees at their current pay. Loans can be forgiven if employers keep their employees on the payroll for 8 weeks after the loan origination date.
