Volunteer Roles: Article Assessment Author

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I chose to become involved with MGMA to assist me with a change in my career path. I joined my organization’s ambulatory services department after multiple years in the inpatient world. MGMA offered an excellent range of resources that have helped me further my understanding of concepts, develop new skills, and transform past skills and knowledge to be a successful practice administrator.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

The most rewarding part of volunteering for MGMA is the opportunity to stimulate MGMA members dynamic thinking skills. We all have the ability to learn from others and it is rewarding to me that I get to assist.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

I have always wanted to work in a “doctor’s office” so when the opportunity to switch from inpatient care to ambulatory presented itself, I jumped at the chance. Increasing my knowledge of practice management has truly broadened my horizons while allowing me to draw on my past to become a well-rounded individual.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

Get involved with a local, state, or national level of MGMA and become certified and obtain fellowship! The resources that one can obtain from websites, meetings, and networking are invaluable.

What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?

My favorite book for practice managers is the MGMA Body of Knowledge Operations Management Volume 1. Offers great insight to everything one must think about when running a practice. My favorite resources are the webinars that my state and the national MGMA websites offer. Material is relevant to my practice. The webinars provide a base knowledge for items that I may not be directly responsible for everyday but allows me the understanding of those concepts to manage the overall practice.

How do you relax after a busy work week?

I relax after a busy work week through spending time with my family, traveling, enjoying sports games, reading, and crafts. My family is very important to me as they help keep me centered, especially my husband.

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

Find your balance and then stick to it. Be selfish when it comes to your personal time. Don’t let anyone or anything steer you away from your personal time as balance can be very hard to find in today’s world.
