Volunteer Roles: 2017 and 2018 MGMA Student Ambassador
Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?
I first heard of MGMA through my master’s program. At the time, I was working as a consultant helping small to mid-sized medical practices and ASCs negotiate contracts with payers and stay HIPAA compliant. MGMA provided great resources and networking opportunities for me to develop my knowledge surrounding practice management.
What do you find most rewarding about being a Student Ambassador for MGMA?
Meeting other Student Ambassadors at various stages of their careers and hearing about their experiences and plans for the future is the most rewarding part of being a Student Ambassador for MGMA.
How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?
I strongly believe that doctors should be able to spend their time helping patients. My goal is to enable them to do so by making sure that the business and IT side of their practice is running smoothly. I also believe practices are a vital part of making healthcare affordable.
What is the best tip you have to give to other students looking to start a career in Healthcare?
Talk to people! Healthcare is a huge industry and there are jobs in hospitals, IT, practices, insurance, consulting, and much more. Ask questions about people's careers and how and why they ended up in their current role.
What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?
Depends on the topic, MGMA, IHI, and Modern Healthcare are my favorites!
How do you relax after a busy work week?
I love climbing mountains and backpack most weekends in the summer!
What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?
Planning out as much as I can ahead of time, even if it's just a 3-hour block to relax on a Sunday night.
