    Volunteer Role: Article Assessment Author

Why did you decide to get involved with MGMA?

I joined MGMA because I wanted to increase my knowledge and skill set in medical group management.  It really is the premier organization for those of us in this field.  It really has a tremendous amount of resources.  I learned so much preparing for the Certified Medical Practice Executive exam.

What do you find most rewarding about volunteering for MGMA?

I find it is a way that I can give back the organization that really has done so much for me.  I enjoying helping other develop their knowledge and skills within the profession.

How did you decide that practice management was the career for you?

I have had the opportunity to work both in Hospital setting and practice management.  I really enjoying supporting providers in caring for members of our community.  Real population health occurs in the clinic setting.  It is helping patients manage chronic conditions, supporting pediatric patients as they grow and develop and being an integral and connected part of the community.

What is the best tip you give to people who are just starting a career in practice management?

I think the best tips I could give to someone starting is first be yourself.  Don’t try to be who you think others want you to be.  You don’t have to act like a seasoned executive when you first start out.  You bring a unique set of skills, personality and experience with you.  Be that person at home and at work.  Second is to have a voracious appetite for learning.  Don’t be afraid to ask what an acronym means if you don’t know.  Ask questions and seek out answers.

What is your favorite book or website or resource for practice managers?

My go to really is mgma.com.  It is the first one listed on my bookmarks

How do you relax after a busy work week?

I love spending time with my kids and my wife.  We also love to watch history documentaries.  Sounds boring but we love it!

What is your top tip for maintaining work/life balance?

This has been harder for me since I have been working home almost exclusively since last summer.  I never intended to work from home so I don’t have a separate spot.  I took over my wife’s sewing table in our family room.  It is hard to have work/life balance because work is just a few steps away.  I have tried to maintain normal business hours but it has been a challenge.  I am working on being ok with walking away from my desk even if all my tasks for the day are not completed.
