Fellowship Paper

Risk & Compliance

Michael Noland MHA, FACMPE, CHFP
This paper documents the medical malpractice reforms that are in place and defensive medicine practices used in an obstetrical setting.  The literature review outlines the historical burden that this has been for medical practices and health systems. The paper entails medical malpractice history, proponents, opponents, costs, and reforms within the medical system.  Medical malpractice costs can lead to defensive medicine practices by obstetricians that are positive and negative in nature.  The proposed ideas that are possible solutions are discussed in depth. Within those proposed reforms and defensive medicine practices are the pros and cons along with whether they were successful or not.
