This paper encompasses what a medical practice needs to do to be in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, better known as HIPAA.  HIPAA comprises of five major categories including, the Privacy Rule, the Security Rule, the Transaction Rule, the Identifiers Rule, the Enforcement Rule, and the Health information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act.  This paper focuses primarily on the Privacy and Security Rules of HIPAA and their importance in a medical practice’s compliance plan.  HIPAA standards are ever-evolving and the practice needs to keep up with the technology and industry trends which will be reflected in their policy and procedures so their HIPAA manual is current.
