    Project Summary

A recently hired Mount Nittany Physician Group Otolaryngologist also holds a fellowship in the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.  He proposes developing a sublingual immunotherapy program (SLIT) for the patient population, both adult and pediatric.  The recent departure of one Allergist from the group exposes a need in the community for offering allergy alternatives, particularly for the pediatric population.  The departing allergy provider was the only physician in the group offering pediatric allergy services.  The competing group in the community is not offering SLIT and they employ only one pediatric allergist.  Although testing associated with SLIT is covered by insurance, the sublingual drops themselves are not.  It is imperative to establish a price point for the drops at the appropriate level to make them both affordable as an out of pocket expense as well as worth consideration as a viable alternative to traditional therapy.  The provider suggests setting the cost similar to that of drug co-pays.  This tactic was successful in his previous practice, located in a much smaller market.   Given the size of our market and the opportunity due to service demand, this program is worth consideration.  Exploration of investment costs, long-term monthly expenses and potential patient candidates within the system are essential to determine feasibility.
