MGMA Stat: Most practices offer a patient portal

The Medical Group Management Association’s most recent MGMA Stat poll asked healthcare leaders if their practice offers a patient portal. Nine out of 10 respondents said that their organization offers a patient portal. The remaining 10% do not, citing that they are working to implement one soon or have the software as part of their EHR, but it has not yet been implemented.

Of the 90% that offer a patient portal, 43% accept patient-generated health data (PGHD) for clinician review. Additionally, 37% reported their patient portal does not accept PGHD for review and the remaining 20% were unsure.

This poll was conducted on July 24, 2018, with 1,756 applicable responses. Pamela Ballou-Nelson, RN, MSPH, CMPE, PhD, principal, MGMA Consulting, offers insight on the importance of patient portals in her article, “Are portals a means to patient activation?”
