Summer may have seemed longer than ever for those watching and waiting for the proposed 2020 Physician Fee Schedule — just ask the MGMA Government Affairs team.

Thankfully, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) did release the proposed 2020 Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) at the end of July, which proposes changes to both Medicare physician payment and quality reporting program policies. The final rule is expected to be published in early November.

If you missed the Aug. 7 member-exclusive webinar ("MGMA Regulatory and Payment Outlook") explaining the proposed changes, you can access it on demand. Members who have questions regarding any of these policies should contact MGMA Government Affairs staff at 202-293-3450 or govaff@mgma.org.

Getting down to business

We heard from many MGMA members who said they want resources on evaluating the potential addition of a new provider or service line. To that end, you can now access the Medical Practice Pro Formula Template, our latest member-benefit tool.

The format of a pro forma financial statement is similar if not exactly like your monthly or annual financial statements that record financial activity in your practice. The difference is that a pro forma statement looks to the future; whereas, your monthly or annual financial statements record historical data. The steps to creating a pro forma can be both linear and circular. As you follow the steps below and gather more information, you may have to circle back to your original assumptions and modify them as needed.

To help you navigate the template, there's a new article by Laurie M. East, CPA, MBA, FACMPE, to walk you through the elements: information gathering, developing assumptions about volume, revenue and expenses, physician compensation and more.

In case you missed it

Been busy all summer long? It's okay if you missed out on some of our earlier member-benefit resources — and we now have more ways to access them.
