MGMA advocates for improved HIPAA electronic transaction standards
MGMA submitted comments
and is testifying this week in response to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) Draft Recommendations for the Predictability Roadmap. The NCVHS is a federal advisory body mandated with making recommendations to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on HIPAA electronic transaction standards, code sets, security and privacy, and other areas. The Roadmap outlines potential improvements in the identification and implementation of administrative standards for provider-payer communications.
In its response to NCVHS, the Association urged:
- More aggressive enforcement of health plan compliance with mandatory electronic transaction standards and operating rules;
- Significant streamlining of the standards development process, with more input from physician practices;
- Establishing clear business need and completion of a comprehensive return on investment study before mandating new standards; and
- That willing trading partners be permitted to test new standards, and these tests should be limited in scope and approved by HHS.
