Gerard Filicko, MHA, CMPE - Senior Executive, Virginia Care Partners

Gerard Filicko is the senior executive responsible for Virginia Care Partners, a physician-led clinically integrated network of 900 physicians in the greater central Virginia area.  While spending nearly 30 years working side-by-side with physicians to enhance their practices, care delivery systems and profitability, Gerard has experienced first-hand the daily struggles in both primary care and specialty practice.  He knows what it takes to achieve the Quadruple Aim of balancing quality care, improving patient experience, reducing cost and enhancing the physician’s quality of life.  This understanding informs his role as a physician advocate, and has dramatically helped influence legislative activity in Virginia.

This past year, in the face of stiff opposition from health plans, Gerard engaged an “army of volunteers” to secure passage of a credentialing reimbursement law that requires all insurance carriers to reimburse for care delivered during a provider’s credentialing process.  Through his leadership, he engineered a multi-faceted collaborative effort to secure passage of the Senate bill by a wide 37-3 margin, and the House bill was unanimously approved.  Effective in July, this law has had an immediate and direct positive impact on all physician practices in the Commonwealth.

Gerard has been Legislative Liaison for the Virginia MGMA since 2011, is past president of the Richmond MGMA chapter, and serves on the MGMA Government Affairs Council.  The Medical Society of Virginia Board appointed him to its Advocacy Committee, and he volunteers on the Leadership Council of the Virginia Center for Health Innovation.

By way of formal education, Gerard holds a Masters in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia and an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia.  He is married with three adult children, two precious grandchildren, and in his spare time produces award-winning beer from his small home brewery.  Which frankly doesn’t get nearly as much attention these days as he would like.
