Help Keep Meeting Costs Down
Staying at one of the official meeting hotels allows MGMA to negotiate better rates in the cities you want to meet in and helps MGMA keep registration costs down.

When booking through the official housing block, you’re supporting the Association by avoiding fees that result from significant sections of the room blocks being reserved but left unfilled or canceled at the time of the conference. If MGMA does not achieve a minimum number of overnight accommodations, the price of service will increase registration fees for future programs.

General questions
Please call the MGMA Customer Service Center toll-free at 877.275.6462, ext. 1888. Please be assured that under MGMA's contracts with the official conference hotels, attendees who book through MGMA's official housing bureau are guaranteed the lowest available Group rates for rooms at the official conference hotels. If you choose to reserve a room in another manner than through the MGMA official housing bureau, neither MGMA nor its official housing bureau will be responsible for any problems that may arise with respect to your reservation.

Choose your Boston adventure!

Boston is one of North America's most beautiful and historic cities, offering visitors a unique blend of historical sites and modern attractions, beautiful waterfront views and lush parks, wonderful hotels and restaurants, and more exciting events and things to do and see than you can possibly fit into one visit.

Whether you're planning your first trip or have been here dozens of times, you'll find plenty to explore and enjoy in Boston during MGMA18 | The Annual Conference. Here are just some of the local attractions in the three areas MGMA has secured hotels in.

Downtown Boston

Faneuil HallFaneuil Hall Marketplace (Quincy Market)
Faneuil Hall Marketplace - also called Quincy Market - offers 100+ stores, artisan pushcarts, restaurants, and pubs right on Boston's famed Freedom Trail. Faneuil Marketplace consists of four historic buildings dating back to the 1800s, including Quincy Market and Freedom Trail site, Faneuil Hall where the Boston Tea Party rebellion against British Taxation began. An appealing mix of local shops, international brands, street performers, top restaurants, pubs, and food stalls spill out onto the cobblestone plaza, a historic market area where merchants and shoppers have come together for almost four centuries.

Boston PubsHistoric Bars & Taverns
Want to see where the Sons of Liberty plotted the American Revolution?  Or raise your glass at the oldest bar in Boston?  Visit these historic Boston bars and taverns where Bostonians still gather today. Boston's oldest bars, pubs, and taverns may be exactly the historic part of the city you'll enjoy the most if you long to follow in the footsteps of the Founding Fathers - and enjoy some refreshment at the same time.

Freedom TrailFreedom Trail
For the ultimate walk through history, follow the red strip of the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail to see 16 sites important to American freedom and civil liberties. In addition to the famous Colonial and Revolutionary War sites along the Trail, you'll see other attractions closely related to America's fight for liberty such as the USS Constitution, known as "Old Ironsides," famous its role in the War of 1812. Along the way, you'll pass through several famous historic Boston neighborhoods - Beacon Hill, the North End, Charlestown.  Be sure to allow time for a meal in one of the many wonderful nearby restaurants.  If you love shopping, you'll want to linger in Faneuil Marketplace after you explore the Faneuil Hall on the Freedom Trail.

Rose Kennedy GreenwayThe Greenway
The Rose Kennedy Greenway stretches along the eastern side of Historic Downtown, forming a ribbon-like park from the North End to Chinatown. Even though it's new, not historic, take a few minutes or a couple of hours to explore all or part of it.  Look for the distinct sections, each with its own attractions such as art, a carousel, fountains, a seasonal beer garden, lush plantings, and grassy fields, and plenty of benches and tables for relaxing.

Seaport District / South Boston Waterfront

Tea Party Ships and MuseumsTea Party Ships & Museum
With costumed actors, interactive displays, and high tech, the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum gives you an all-encompassing, totally immersive experience that brings to life the time and events leading up to the American Revolution. The guided 1-hour tour of the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum takes you back to the momentous December night in 1773 when the Sons of Liberty touched off the American Revolution with their tea party in Boston Harbor. You'll be entertained, but you also get to participate, explore, and learn.

The Institute of Contemporary Art/BostonThe Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston
For over 65 years, the Institute of Contemporary Art has been introducing to Boston and the country some of the most important contemporary artists of our time, from Pablo Picasso and Robert Rauschenberg to Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman.

Boston Harbor WalkHarborwalk
Explore Boston's legendary waterfront and enjoy stunning views of the ocean and surrounding architecture, when you stroll the Boston Harborwalk. Hugging the water's edge, this inviting path follows the piers, beaches, wharves and shoreline around Boston Harbor. Discover unique shops, public art, historical exhibitions and breathtaking scenery, as you enjoy a relaxing walk or invigorating jog through one of the country's loveliest urban settings.

Back Bay

Public GardensPublic Garden
In addition to being one of the most beautiful all-season spots in Boston, the Public Garden is where you'll find the Make Way for Ducklings statues celebrating Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and their eight offspring celebrated in Robert McCloskey's famous children's book. From mid-spring through mid-fall, spend a tranquil 15 minutes on a Swan Boat ride around the Lagoon, where you'll see plenty of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard's descendants, Duck Island, and perhaps a pair of real swans. The Public Garden is located across the street from Boston Common, and together, these two beloved parks form the green heart of the city.

Newbury Street ShoppingNewbury Street Shopping, Dining, & Architecture
Mellow Victorian brownstones, clothing boutiques, and trendy restaurants where outdoor dining rules during warm months come together on Newbury Street's eight fashionable blocks in the exclusive Back Bay neighborhood. With Prudential Center and Copley Place shopping nearby, the whole area is a fashionista's dream come true, and a top Boston attraction for visitors as well as local shoppers.

Trinity ChurchTrinity Church
Ask any architect, architectural historian, or critic and they’ll tell you: Trinity Church is a masterpiece of American architecture. And it has been considered so since its dedication in 1877, when it heralded the signature “Richardsonian Romanesque” style of its celebrated designer, and presented a bold, fresh new face and feeling for ecclesiastical architecture in America.

SIMON SINEK
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
THE INFINITE GAME: LEADERSHIP FOR LONG-TERM SUCCESS

Sunday, Sept. 30, 3:30-5:00 pm

Games like chess or baseball are finite: The rules are clear, as are the winners and losers. Most organizations and leaders are focused on winning, but how do you win a game that never ends. In business, there often is no "winning," much less staying ahead in a game that doesn't end. For medical practices, there's always a fresh set of challenges — the leaders who understand this infinite game and ignore the short-term mindset can innovate out of problem areas to build stronger organizations and outlast the competition. Great leaders play the infinite game, and this session will help you understand how they do it. Following the main presentation, attendees will be able to engage with the best-selling author of Start With Why and Leaders Eat Last in a 30-minute Q&A session.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Identify the different approaches between short-term/finite and long-term/infinite goal-setting
  • Indicate where strategies and tactics may be misaligned
  • Recognize opportunities to shift away from a finite mindset within your organization

MEL ROBBINS
THE FIVE SECOND RULE: KEYS TO CONFIDENCE AND ACTION AT WORK AND BEYOND

Monday, Oct. 1, 8:30-10:00 am

You are not designed to quickly embrace uncomfortable or risky changes — our minds are engineered to warn us and be protective. But to achieve success in the healthcare industry today, you must be willing to do difficult things that carry risk. This session will explore the speaker's "5 Second Rule" approach to identifying opportunities, developing discipline to trust your own instincts and sharing ideas so that they inspire others to embrace them. The speaker will use audience interaction to demonstrate the rule's ability to bring focus to decision-making, changing behavior and taking smart risks for better results at work and in your personal life.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Identify decision-making methods to increase productivity, confidence and courage
  • Recognize the science of habits to create immediate behavior change
  • Compile actions over procrastination in both professional and personal settings

Advanced | Traditional

Owen Dahl, MBA, LAFACHE, CHBS, LSSMBB, consultant, Owen Dahl Consulting, The Woodlands, Texas

Value-based healthcare begins and ends with the patient, but how do practices assess and implement the operational processes needed to succeed? Practices must first acknowledge that all patients are not the same and should not be treated the same. The processes to support these unique populations must be designed and implemented for success in the transition from fee for service to value-based healthcare. Staffing, information technology, workflow design, revenue cycle management, patient communication and quality reporting all require assessment and redesign, depending on how far a practice embraces value in care delivery and reimbursement models. This preconference session offers tools, processes, implementation strategies and assessments to build the business case for and the processes to succeed in value-based care.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Determine patient populations with the best opportunity for value-based care
  • Recommend workflows to provide the desired care to the selected patient population
  • Establish a change management plan for a practice's transition to value-based care

9:00am - 12:00pm

PRE103 Chemistry Tests: Steps for Mistake-Free Hiring and Retention
Available for ACMPE Credit: 1.75 | CME Credit: 1.75 | CNE Credit: 1.7 | CPE Credit: 2 | CEU Credit: 1.75
Intermediate | Traditional

Steve A. Dickens, JD, FACMPE, vice president, Medical Practice Services, State Volunteer Insurance Co., Brentwood, Tenn.

The melting pot of personalities and work styles in your practice can make human resource management one of the most time-consuming aspects of your work. Even if you hire the right person, the right onboarding and culture need to exist to keep them for long-term employee success. This preconference will explore how to avoid common mistakes in hiring and keep the connection growing through an employee’s first 90 days via motivation and team building with strong communication of organizational values and mission.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Examine your practice's processes for effective hiring, motivation and retention
  • Survey employee personality, generational and work style differences for team-building
  • Analyze existing policies and culture to minimize mistakes in human resource management

PRE104 Leading Change: Executive Leadership Tools and Concepts

Ron Menaker, EdD, MBA, CPA, FACMPE, assistant professor, Healthcare Administration, College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
Michael O'Connell, MHA, FACMPE, FACHE, senior vice president, operations, University Healthcare Alliance, Newark, Calif.

Two medical practice executives for medical groups in the U.S. News and World Report's top 10 hospitals list will explore how ACMPE's Body of Knowledge can be applied to lead one's team through change to achieve desired outcomes in a workshop setting. Attendees will connect with tools on how to be a better listener, how to run a more productive meeting, approaches on delegating to staff more effectively toward their development, and learning how a structural tension model can help the medical practice achieve its goals. Through a combination of lecture teaching, round-table discussion, and participant report-outs, the audience will be able to better understand how we learn new concepts and ideas, how to better navigate through complex problems and solutions, and what tools can be used to achieve one's desired outcomes.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Develop four new leadership tools in the medical practice to achieve desired outcomes
  • Discover the value of leading through change with interactive group learning
  • Apply a new leadership tool in your medical practice to create positive change

Available for ACMPE Credit: 1.75 | CME Credit: 1.75 | CNE Credit: 1.7 | CPE Credit: 2 | CEU Credit: 1.75
Intermediate | Traditional

Frank Cohen, MBB MPA, director, analytics, Doctors Management LLC, Knoxville Tenn.
Ryan Lawler, data analyst I, MGMA, Englewood, Colo.

Join Frank Cohen as he presents with MGMA Data staff to illustrate how to apply benchmarking best practices to critical elements of practice management: cost of care and provider compensation. This session will help you identify the metrics available in your practice and how to compare and utilize them for improved results. To manage something, it is necessary to know what it is, where it is, and how it got there. Measurement and benchmarking are only the first steps in the process. Practice administrators must be able to understand the contextual factors, analyze, and implement data-driven (and people-driven) decisions, to keep a practice thriving.

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Determine metrics to track in medical practice
  • Analyze and interpret data to identify high-value process improvement initiatives
  • Outline outcomes of process improvement initiatives
