Series details

Are you planning to pursue board certification through ACMPE? Make plans to join others on the same path in a study group series.
 
Board certification through ACMPE is designed for individuals with at least two years of experience in healthcare management, including at least six months in a supervisory role. Earning the Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) credential confirms your expertise and brings greater recognition from physicians, executives, industry professionals and peers.
 
Each session, a subject matter expert(s) who is an ACMPE member will present a knowledge domain from the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management, which forms the blueprint for the certification exams.
 
After completing this series, you will be able to:
  • Describe the expectations of the multiple choice and scenario-based examinations for board certification in medical practice management
  • List the major concepts of the tasks associated with the six knowledge domains in the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management
  • Connect with other members who are also preparing to take the exams

The Study Group Series consists of six one-hour sessions:  

Session 1 — Board Certification Program Overview

  • Identify program eligibility
  • Recognize the requirements to advance
  • Summarize program changes starting January 1, 2019

Session 2 — Financial Management

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Recognize regulations of coding and billing
  • Interpret cash flow
  • Identify how to create and manage budgets

Session 3 — Operations Management

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Summarize a strategic plan
  • Recognize a process improvement program
  • Identify facility design for quality and safety reasons

Session 4 — Risk and Compliance Management

This session will provide you with the knowledge to:
  • Interpret policies and procedures that will reduce the potential for adverse events
  • Summarize a compliance program that follows all laws and regulations
  • Recognize accreditation and licensure requirements for providers and the practice.

Session 5 — Human Resources Management

  • Interpret staff compensation and benefit plans
  • Identify an effective staffing strategy

Session 6 — Organizational Governance and Patient-Centered Care

  • Identify corporate legal structure and the governance for the organization.
  • Interpret the corporate mission, vision, and values statement in an organization

Claiming Credit: 

If you wish to claim continuing education credit, you must first attend the webinar and pass the associated exam with a score of 80% or higher. Registration is required for BOTH the webinar and the exam. 
  • ACMPE, medical practice administrators in certification and Fellowship through ACMPE
    •  Exam must be completed no later than: June 7, 2019 
  • CEU, generic continuing education unit 
    • Exam must be completed no later than: June 7, 2019

Claiming credit instructions 


Team: 

Participants who want to claim continuing education credit must be individually registered for the webinar and subsequent exam. If participants would like to attend the webinar as a team using one person’s log-in credentials, the person who launched the webinar will need to email a list (first and last names) of all participants to continuinged@mgma.com after the webinar has concluded. MGMA will mark these individuals’ status as “completed” within five business days to allow each team participant to claim his or her desired continuing education credit.


Official Continuing Education Statements and Availability

American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE)

ACMPE credit continues to be a free member benefit and is available to registered webinar attendees who purchase and complete both the webinar and exam.

A cumulative total of 50 ACMPE Continuing Education credit hours is among the requirements for advancement to Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) status. Once you have advanced to CMPE or Fellow status, you must earn and submit 50 hours of qualifying credit hours every three years to maintain your designation.

One ACMPE credit is earned for every 60 minutes of educational content, rounded down to the nearest 0.25.


Continuing Education Units (CEU)

Session 1 — Board Certification Program Overview

 

Janet Benzing

Janet Benzing, CMPE

Janet is currently an Executive Leader with over fourteen years in health care administration providing operational oversight and active management for multi-specialty medical practices and outpatient hospital service lines including Wound and Sleep Facilities. Her experience includes assuring the seamless delivery of quality medical services within AAAHC/TJC/CMS accreditation standards. Janet is passionate about improved outcomes, effective teams and efficient workflow in the healthcare environment and beyond. She has experienced that the best relationships are based on the foundation of honesty, trust and mutual respect.

Janet is active with the Medical Group Management Association including membership on the National level and in Illinois since 2006 and in Mississippi since 2013. She is on the Mississippi MGMA board serving as Secretary and the American Academy of Healthcare Executives (ACMPE) Forum Representative for MS. In 2009 Janet was recognized by the Central Illinois Business Magazine as one of the area's Forty under 40.

She has also been involved with Rural Health organizations in both Illinois and Mississippi. These organizations provide advocacy and help support access to healthcare in rural areas. Janet enjoys her position in healthcare and is passionate about mentoring new leaders in the field. Her disposition is that of a servant leader and strives to help others be successful in their chosen field.

Jimmie Holland

Jimmie Holland, MBA, MHA, FACMPE, LSSGB

Jimmie Holland is the interim leader of the HCA Physician Services Group Performance Improvement Team where he specializes in assisting practices in achieving outstanding operational and financial results.  In this role he works on projects ranging from individual practice improvement projects to enterprise wide initiatives.  Prior to joining this team Jimmie spent four years serving as a Practice Manager for HCA in the Nashville market.  Jimmie is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives which he earned by writing on the use of military leadership techniques in the medical practice environment.  Prior to joining HCA he served in the 101st Airborne Division and currently serves in the Tennessee National Guard as an Engineer specializing in military construction and combat demolition.  Jimmie is married to Jamie Holland and they have two children and one ridiculously energetic dog.
 


Session 2 — Financial Management

 

Michelle Burris

Michelle Burris, MBA, FACMPE

Michelle Burris brings with her 18 years of accounting, finance and operations experience, 10 of which are at the executive level, in for-profit and not-for-profit Health Care Services organizations. Upon finishing her service in the United States Marine Corps, Michelle received her Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Jacksonville State University, Alabama and her MBA from Monmouth University, New Jersey. Michelle has held several high-profile leadership positions in the health care industry. Most recently, Michelle assumed the role of CFO for Delaware Hospice. Previously, Michelle simultaneously held both CFO and VP of Operations positions at Reading Health Physician Network. Prior to Reading, she was CFO at Heritage Medical Group; and VP/CFO at Lancaster General Medical Group. Michelle began her 18-year health care career with Meridian Health Resources where she ultimately held the role of Controller. Michelle is a Fellow through the ACMPE and an active member in the National and Pennsylvania Chapter of MGMA. She serves as a Board member for the PA Chapter and is actively involved in the State Legislative and Education Committees. At the National level, Michelle serves on the ACMPE Board Nomination Committee. Michelle has been a speaker and published several articles related to practice management.

Katie Fergus, CPA, CMPE

Katie Fergus, CPA CMPE has been immersed in accounting and finance issues related to the health care industry. She worked in public accounting, auditing non-profit organizations and working with colleges and universities. When Katie entered the health care industry she became a medical billing manager at a pediatric rehabilitation center. Aspiring to do more in health care, Katie took a position with a local hospital system where she worked on financial forecasting models and capital projects. Katie earned her Master of Public Administration degree in 2008, connecting her with the tools and resources required to develop a business model. She founded FinanSynergy® in 2016, a consulting agency providing financial strategies to small and mid-sized independent medical practices. In July 2017 Katie purchased a medical billing company, completing her vision of serving this core group of providers.
 


Session 3 — Operations Management

 

Jeff Rydburg

Jeff Rydburg , CMPE

Jeff Rydburg has served in health care management since 1984.  He is currently an Operations Group Vice President for HCA Physician Services Group in Nashville.  In this role, he provides management support for the 4000+ physicians and 1000 practice locations.  Jeff has held a variety of leadership roles with HCA Physician Service Group for the last 15 years.  Jeff started his career as a CPA with Price Waterhouse before moving in to health care management with the Allina system in Minnesota.  Prior to HCA, Jeff has worked in both for profit and non profit health care management organizations, including private physician practices.  He was an Operations Vice President for Allina before moving to Nashville to serve as an Operations Vice President for PhyCor.  He was President of the first MGMA hospital sponsored medical practice society named HAPS and served as the President of MGMA’s Integrated Services Medical Practice Executive Assembly.  Jeff has been a speaker many times at MGMA conference over the years.

Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith, MHA FACMPE

Andrew Smith is a Regional Director of Operations for Saint Thomas Medical Partners (STMP) at Saint Thomas Health (a member of Ascension Health) and a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. He earned his MHA from Texas A&M Health Science Center and his BS in Biology with a minor in Business Administration from the Texas A&M University. Andrew’s responsibilities for Saint Thomas Medical Partners include overseeing the clinical, operational and financial performance of 8 practice locations, as well as serving as the project lead for STMP’s care site strategy that includes opening 9 additional primary care sites with ancillary services across the Greater Nashville area by June 2018. Prior to joining Saint Thomas Medical Partners in 2016, Andrew served as Assistant Director of Operations for Northwest Physicians, a multispecialty provider group in Northwest Arkansas. In addition to his operational responsibilities at Northwest, he also oversaw the launch of a number of new strategic efforts, including a pediatric urgent care location, a mobile Medicare Annual Wellness program, and the transition of our senior health service line from provider-based sites to free-standing clinics. Andrew is a native of Brenham, Texas and now lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sandra DeLeon

Sandra DeLeon, FACHE, CMPE, MSHA, MSW

Sandra DeLeon is the Director of Administrative Operations at SpineNevada, Minimally Invasive Spine Institute in Reno, Nevada. She is a former Director of Operations and Business Development at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and Director of Community Health at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System.  Sandra is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Certified Medical Practice Executive. Sandra has 17 years of healthcare experience and 8 years of Compliance and Ethics experience in the for profit, not for profit and academic settings. She is a graduate of the Trinity University Healthcare Administration Program and completed her Administrative Residency at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Sandra is also a MSW graduate of the Worden School of Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.

Erinn Beekman

Erinn Beekman, MBA, CMPE

Erinn Beekman is a Senior Consultant at Cornerstone, a Business Advisory firm, and a Performance Coach with Performance Culture, Inc., a web-based performance management platform that helps managers and employees improve performance through continuous coaching, timely feedback and meaningful recognition. As a Cornerstone Business Advisor, Erinn helps clients launch, grow and make a planned and desirable exit. Additionally, Erinn consults leaders on methods to build high performing teams through the Performance Culture Coaching Process. Starting from a company's vision, mission, and core values, she helps clients define corporate strategy and key performance and behavior indicators for employees to achieve company goals.

Shirley Zwinggi

Shirley Zwinggi, MBA, FACMPE

Shirley Zwinggi is a Practice Administrator for the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She has over twenty-five years of academic/large group practice management experience. Shirley’s responsibilities include human resources, graduate medical education and administration. She began her career in Human Resources, serving in management roles in Recruitment, Benefits and Employee Relations. Shirley then transition to Surgery as a Practice Administrator. Shirley received her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Oklahoma State University and her Master of Business Administration from Texas Women’s University. Her certifications include, SPHR, Senior Professional Human Resources, CMPE, Certified Medical Practice Executive and Fellow in ACMPE.


Session 6 — Organizational Governance and Patient-Centered Care

 

Deborah Hudson

Deborah Hudson, FACMPE

Debbie Hudson is the MGMA liaison to Alabama, and Kentucky. She is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives, and a past president of the Tennessee MGMA. She is a former Tennessee ACMPE Forum Rep. She was a practice manager in Northeast Tennessee for 10 years before becoming a Business Development and Account Executive for State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company.
