2017 ACMPE Board Certification Study Group Series - On Demand

The 2017 ACMPE Board Certification Study Group Series offers the chance for those pursuing board certification to learn in an online environment while preparing for the exams.

The ACMPE Board certification exams cover six areas of expertise, or knowledge domains. Join others who are pursuing board certification in medical practice management to learn about the domains and prepare for the exams.

The MGMA Board Certification Study Group Series consists of nine, one-hour sessions. During each webinar, subject matter experts who are ACMPE Fellows will present content on a knowledge domain from the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management, which forms the blueprint for the certification exams.

Board certification through ACMPE is designed for individuals with at least two years of experience in healthcare management, including at least six months in a supervisory role. Earning the Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) credential confirms your expertise and brings greater recognition from physicians, executives, industry professionals and peers.

After completing this series, you will be able to:

  • Describe the expectations of the multiple choice, essay and scenario-based examinations for board certification in medical practice management
  • List the major concepts of the tasks associated with the six knowledge domains in the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management

American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE)


 



Credit continues to be a free member benefit for Certified Medical Practice Executives (CMPEs) and Fellows in the American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPEs) and can be claimed on these members' ACMPE transcripts.

ACMPE credit is available to MGMA members who are enrolled in the Association’s credentialing program. Learn more about ACMPE credit.

One ACMPE credit is earned for every 60 minutes of educational contact, rounded down to the nearest 0.25.
 

Continuing Education Units (CEU)

Generic CEU certificates of attendance are available to registered webinar attendees.

Session 1: Overview and Exams

Deborah Hudson, FACMPE

Deborah Hudson is the MGMA liaison to Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. She is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives and a past president of the Tennessee MGMA. She is the former Tennessee ACMPE Forum Rep. She was a practice manager in Northeast Tennessee for 10 years before becoming a business development and account executive for State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company. Janet Benzing, CMPE

Janet Benzing is the ACMPE Forum Representative for Mississippi and is a Certified Medical Practice Executive, receiving her certification in 2015. Ms. Benzing has been in practice management in Illinois and Mississippi for over 15 years currently serving as Executive Director for a Hospital Owned Multispecialty Medical Group in North Mississippi.

 


Sessions 2 & 3: Operations Management

Margaret Cook, MBA, CMPE

Margaret has more than 26 years of experience in business and healthcare. She provides specialized consulting services with Kassouf & Co., P.C. for healthcare providers with an emphasis on physician practice management. Her areas of specialty include recruiting and credentialing for new providers, evaluation of business opportunities and ancillary services, assessing existing practices for operational improvements and workflow efficiencies, and assisting healthcare groups with governmental compliance and regulatory requirements. Margaret holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Samford University and is a Certified Medical Practice Executive. She is a member of MGMA and serves as Secretary of the Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary.

Andrew Smith, MHA FACMPE

Andrew Smith is a Regional Director of Operations for Saint Thomas Medical Partners (STMP) at Saint Thomas Health (a member of Ascension Health) and a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. He earned his MHA from Texas A&M Health Science Center and his BS in Biology with a minor in Business Administration from the Texas A&M University. Andrew’s responsibilities for Saint Thomas Medical Partners include overseeing the clinical, operational and financial performance of 8 practice locations, as well as serving as the project lead for STMP’s care site strategy that includes opening 9 additional primary care sites with ancillary services across the Greater Nashville area by June 2018. Prior to joining Saint Thomas Medical Partners in 2016, Andrew served as Assistant Director of Operations for Northwest Physicians, a multispecialty provider group in Northwest Arkansas. In addition to his operational responsibilities at Northwest, he also oversaw the launch of a number of new strategic efforts, including a pediatric urgent care location, a mobile Medicare Annual Wellness program, and the transition of our senior health service line from provider-based sites to free-standing clinics. Andrew is a native of Brenham, Texas and now lives in Nashville, Tennessee.


Session 4: Risk and Compliance Management & Patient-Centered Care

Curtis E Turner Jr., MBA M.ED., CMPE, COA, CPSS, OSC, FNAO

Curtis Turner serves as the Manager of Practice Operations within the Department of Surgery with the Greenville Health System covering Breast Health, Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, Ophthalmology, Optometry, Optical Sales, and Multi-Specialty Surgery. Curtis has served as a practice manager, training manager and Noncommissioned Officer in Charge during his career over the last 24 years. Curtis served 13-years on active duty in the United States Army in various leadership and clinical roles. Curtis was named the Paraoptometric of the South for 2017 by the Southern Educational Conference of Optometrist and the Paraoptometric of the Year for 2016 by the South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association. In addition to his experience in practice leadership Curtis currently serves on the Greenville Health System Veterans Association Steering Committee, he is the Vice President of Membership for the Greenville Memorial Hospital Chapter of Toastmasters International and is the ACMPE Chair for the Greenville Chapter of the South Carolina Medical Group Management Association. Curtis is the former Chair of the American Optometric Association Paraoptometric Section as well as former roles as Chair Elect and Member-at-Large and former Chair of California Optometric Association Paraoptometric Section.


Sessions 5 & 6: Human Resource Management

Kathy R. White, FACMPE, PHR

Kathy White is a Senior Medical Practice Consultant in the Medical Practice Services Department with SVMIC where she has worked for since 2006. Kathy has spent over 30 years in managing private and hospital owned practices as well serving as Director of Operations for HCA in the Chattanooga Market. Kathy is a board certified medical practice executive, a Fellow in the American College of Medical Executives and is a Certified Professional in Human Resource Management – PHR. Kathy specializes in operations, finance, human resources and compliance. She serves as a volunteer with the national MGMA as a mentor and grader for the ACMPE national certification and fellowship program

Venus Biskis, MBA, FACMPE

Venus Biskis has been in medical management for more than 30 years and a member of MGMA/ACMPE for more than 13 years. Biskis is a regional practice director for Community Physicians Network in Indianapolis. She holds an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University and is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives. A past president of Kentucky MGMA, Biskis has served as the ACMPE Forum Representative for the Primary Care Assembly and the Indiana MGMA chapter and as Midwest Section ACMPE Forum Coordinator. She currently holds the position as chair for the ACMPE Advancement Committee.


Sessions 7 & 8: Financial Management

Michelle Burris, MBA, FACMPE

Michelle Burris brings with her 18 years of accounting, finance and operations experience, 10 of which are at the executive level, in for-profit and not-for-profit Health Care Services organizations. Upon finishing her service in the United States Marine Corps, Michelle received her Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Jacksonville State University, Alabama and her MBA from Monmouth University, New Jersey. Michelle has held several high-profile leadership positions in the health care industry. Most recently, Michelle assumed the role of CFO for Delaware Hospice. Previously, Michelle simultaneously held both CFO and VP of Operations positions at Reading Health Physician Network. Prior to Reading, she was CFO at Heritage Medical Group; and VP/CFO at Lancaster General Medical Group. Michelle began her 18-year health care career with Meridian Health Resources where she ultimately held the role of Controller. Michelle is a Fellow through the ACMPE and an active member in the National and Pennsylvania Chapter of MGMA. She serves as a Board member for the PA Chapter and is actively involved in the State Legislative and Education Committees. At the National level, Michelle serves on the ACMPE Board Nomination Committee. Michelle has been a speaker and published several articles related to practice management.

Vibha V. Patel, MBA, CMPE

Vibha V. Patel obtained her MBA from Loyola Graduate School of Business with the concentration in Health Care Management and Marketing as well as a Certified Medical Practice Executives Certification. As a Senior Healthcare Business Banker with PNC Bank, Vibha understands the rapidly changing healthcare environment along with the challenges providers face every day.


Session 9: Organizational Governance

Jimmie Holland MBA, MHA, FACMPE, LSSGB

Jimmie completed his undergraduate education at West Point. Following graduation he served in the United States Army for 5 years including combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as a combat engineer. After his 5 years he transferred to the Tennessee National Guard and began civilian life as a Practice Manager for HCA. He spent 4 years managing Centennial Heart at StoneCrest and then Centennial Heart at Summit. Next Jimmie joined the Performance Improvement team where he serves as an internal consultant to physician practices that are part of the HCA system. His current focus is on helping practices better manage their labor and patient throughput in the practice. Additionally, he is active in the Nashville affiliate of the MGMA as Secretary. Jimmie earned his MBA from Middle Tennessee State University and MHA from Colorado State University.
