About the ACMPE Examinations

To complete the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) examinations requirement, members must pass both the objective and essay examinations. These exams are developed by ACMPE Certified Members and Fellows to provide a comprehensive assessment of factual information, problem solving skills, written communication and general management knowledge.

About the examinations

  • Objective
    A 175-item, multiple-choice test taken within three hours and 15 minutes. This exam assesses your on-the-job knowledge of the broad scope of group practice management principles and practices as described in the Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management 
  • Essay
    Responses to questions about three real-life practice management situations must be answered in formal essay style within one and a half hours. This exam assesses in-depth knowledge of medical practice management principles and issues, problem-solving and decision-making skills and the ability to communicate in formal writing style.

Exam locations and registration process

Objective and essay exams are offered once each year via paper and pencil at the MGMA Annual Conference and three times each year via computer at many locations across the United States. Computerized exams are provided through a network of more than 200 exam centers managed by ACT. To view a map of test center locations, go to the ACT website.

Eligibility to sit for the exams

ACMPE objective and essay examinations are designed for members who have at least two years of direct experience managing a medical practice. Before an ACMPE member is allowed to take the exams they must submit the following documents to demonstrate that they have met the two-year requirement and are committed to the medical practice profession.

  • A current resume or written verification from your employer documenting a minimum of two years experience in an ambulatory or other health care management position.
  • Two  letters of reference, one in each of the following categories:
  1. Certified Medical Practice Executive (CMPE) or Fellow in the ACMPE (FACMPE) verifying qualifications and commitment to pursuing certification.
  2. Chief medical officer or other person serving in a senior leadership capacity in your organization verifying your position and the organization's support for your pursuit of certification (sample reference letterAdobe PDF
