For 87 years, the Association has delivered networking, professional education and resources and political advocacy for medical practice management.
1883: Charles and William Mayo join their father’s practice in Rochester, Minn., forming first physician group practice. 1908: Mayo Clinic hires Harry J. Harwick, one of the first-ever practice administrators. 1926: First Annual Conference of Clinical Managers. What is now the MGMA Annual Conference has been held annually since then. 1963: The name was changed to the Medical Group Management Association in 1963 to reflect the diverse management roles found in group practice. 1998: ACMPE Body of Knowledge for Medical Practice Management developed (ACMPE is the certification division of MGMA). 2011: Members of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) voted to merge to form a new association. 2013: MGMA launches new brand.
